UNIT ONE - Understanding Astronomy
Unit One is covered in Chapters 1-4 and will begin with a basic introduction to the night sky and observational astronomy. We will then investigate gravity and early explanations of the universe and see how modern cosmology arose from them. We will look at how size matters a great deal to astronomers and in what patterns objects in the sky occur, such as during eclipses of the moon and the sun. We will review the basic nature of light and ways astronomers store and analyze light with tools that utilize mirrors and lenses. We will see how other forms of electromagnetic radiation are sources of information about the cosmos. We will investigate how elements have unique spectra and how analysis of spectral lines allows for identification of their source.
